From the get-go, I am not a golfer. I have nothing against the game or those who play it. Quite simply, I do not have an athletic bone in my body, and that’s unfortunate because I love to watch sports.

You wouldn’t want me on your team, not even in a tiddlywinks tournament.

My son Steven is an avid golfer, and though he only started playing in his 20s, he improves each time he hits the links. He loves the game and wished I had introduced him to it when he was a kid.

Who knew? We brought him to baseball. Do they have tee-ball golf?

During one of our recent monsoons, I texted Steve to tell him the Country Club of New Bedford was open, and people were playing golf as I passed by. I thought it was pretty silly, but Steve envied them and said he planned to play the following day even though the forecast called for a cold and windy day.

During my years as a Vermonter, a few of my friends would golf in the winter – in the snow – with orange golf balls.

Winter golf is a thing, even here in Massachusetts.

Tee Time Golf Pass (TTGP) says, “Golfing in the winter might sound crazy, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can be a lot of fun – and a great way to keep your game going when most people are packing away their clubs.”

“In Massachusetts, places like Dennis Highlands and Sandy Burr Country Club keep their doors open as long as the weather behaves,” wrote Kelvin Mangaroo of TTGP. “The trick is finding courses that don’t get too much snow or freeze over, which is why coastal spots like Cape Cod are perfect.”

TTGP’s website includes a list of Massachusetts golf courses, including several in southeastern Massachusetts, that offer winter golf.

Massgolf.org has “14 Tips For Enjoying Winter Golf In Massachusetts.” The first tip – go with the right attitude –  seems to make a lot of sense, but the third is a keeper: “Park near 18 & set the heat to high.”

The site says, “Winter golf in Massachusetts. It’s not the same as summer golf, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it just as much.”
