The new Maryland Jockey Club hired Dan Illman as director of communications.

Previously a writer, correspondent, analyst and handicapper at Daily Racing Form, Illman will lead the organization’s media relations department when the Maryland Jockey Club, a nonprofit entity under the auspices of the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority, assumes control of Maryland’s day-to-day racing operations on Jan. 1.

“We are incredibly pleased to welcome Dan to the team at the new MJC,” president and general manager Bill Knauf said. “He is a proven leader in the field of communications and media, and we are excited for him to spread the message of the strong future of Maryland racing.”

“I’m honored to join the team at the MJC and contribute to the new vision in Maryland,” Illman said. “I am excited to collaborate with horsemen, media colleagues and industry partners to enhance coverage of racing in the state and look forward to delivering compelling multi-media content that aids and informs the horseplayer, handicapper and racing fan.”

Illman began his career at DRF in 1998. He became a handicapper in 2000 and was promoted to DRF.com handicapping editor in 2007. Illman was named executive producer of DRF-TV in 2016.

In 2020, Illman became DRF’s mid-Atlantic correspondent. While at DRF, Illman authored “Betting Maidens & 2-Year-Olds,” produced the “Trip Handicapping” DVD, and hosted DRF’s daily video content.

Last year, Illman received the Old Hilltop Award for covering Thoroughbred racing with excellence and distinction.

Prior to Daily Racing Form, Illman worked as a writer and handicapper at Sports Eye Publications. He is a graduate of Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
