ANNAPOLIS, Md. (7News) — Maryland Governor Wes Moore will announce Friday afternoon an effort to help place fired federal workers and government contractors in state and county jobs across Maryland.
Officials familiar with the plans, which will be announced at a Friday afternoon press conference, said so far 450 former federal employees have filed for unemployment benefits, but that number is expected to grow.

To help them, the state is planning to streamline the recruitment and hiring process for state jobs. There are currently 250 open and posted state jobs, but the Governor is asking agencies to explore their needs for workers and that number is expected to grow.
He is also instructing the state Department of Education to quickly develop plans to help displaced federal workers who may be interested in second careers in teaching to get hired and certified. According to the sources in the Moore administration, there are currently 1600 classrooms in Maryland without teachers.
The governor is also planning on beefing up websites to help connect displaced federal workers and contractors with open jobs in the private sector. According to the sources, there are currently 130,000 open jobs in Maryland, which will be listed.
