KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Market Square Garage has a fresh coat of paint, literally. Knoxville native and golf champion Peter Malnati was honored on Thursday with an 80-foot-tall mural.
The mural is part of Valspar‘s “Be Bright by Valspar” initiative. The paint company is also pairing up with the PGA for the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship.
Malnati is the 2024 Valspar Championship winner. The mural is aimed at highlighting how the Knoxville community is “better together.”
“Being here from, from East Tennessee I got support from a lot of people to help me on my journey as a professional golfer,” Malnati said. “Everybody in life, we’re after the same things, we’re after a sense of belonging, we’re after a sense of meaning. If we can seek those things together, try to find the things that unite us rather than the things that divide us, we’ll be much better off as a community and as a society.”
Painted by artist KaDavien Baylor, the mural features iconic Tennessee designs like the Great Smoky Mountains, music notes and the Tennessee River.
“So, when working with any client, my goal is to make sure that I’m communicating what they want to see in the work and the things of high priority to communicate, which of course was Knoxville,” Baylor said. “At the top of the mural, you see the Smoky Mountains and you see the Tennessee river coming down through the mountains.”
The mural also features Malnati himself, lifting his son after winning the championship.
