Marin Cilic reached the summit of tennis after winning the US Open title in 2014 and has been in two major finals since.
Cilic beat Roger Federer en route to his first major title, and obtained his only victory over Rafael Nadal en route to the 2018 Australian Open final.
The Croatian has been less active on the ATP Tour in the last couple of years, but has not stayed completely away from the limelight.
Having been away from the matchcourt, Cilic has been present on social media and has kept fans updated.
This included Cilic paying tribute to Juan Martin del Potro, after the Argentinian played a farewell exhibition against Novak Djokovic in Buenos Aires.
There have been multiple big name withdrawals from the first major of 2025, as Barbora Krejcikova pulled out of the Australian Open due to a back problem.
Injury has also been a big theme of the last couple of years for Cilic, having undergone a second knee surgery in May last year.
The 36-year-old returned in the latter stages of the 2024 season, but has not competed since the Belgrade Open in November.
Cilic has now taken to Instagram to update fans on what has been going on, as well as revealing the tournament where he is intending to return.
“Hi all, you may have noticed I haven’t participated in this first month of the 2025 season, so I wanted to provide some updates,” said Cilic. “Luckily, my knee is doing well and I wanted to take the opportunity to again thank everyone who helped with that recovery process, especially Dr. Cole (@brianjcolemd ) and his team for the incredible care they provided me.
“Unfortunately, I had a few minor setbacks come up during my pre-season training and want to make sure those are 100% ready before I get back to competing. I’m doing everything I can to get back on tour as soon as possible and hope to join team Croatia in Osijek for the Davis Cup! Thanks for the continued support and well wishes.”
Cilic has been named as part of Croatia’s team to face Slovakia, in the Davis Cup Qualifiers that feature Novak Djokovic.
Cilic officially returned to action in August last year at the Mallorca Challenger, following his second knee surgery.
Despite winning only nine matches in 2024, Cilic managed to win his 21st title in Hangzhou and made history by doing so.
