Man Utd midfielder Christian Eriksen was not in the squad for last weekend’s game against Tottenham in the Premier League.
Christian Eriksen has clarified he missed Manchester United’s game against Tottenham due to a virus.
United’s squad was depleted for their clash against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday and Ruben Amorim was forced to name seven youngsters from the academy on the bench.
Victor Lindelof was the only player on the bench to have made a senior appearance for United and Amorim resisted making a substitution until the final few minutes of the contest.
When Amorim finally made a substitution he replaced Casemiro with Chido Obi, but the exciting young striker was introduced in added time and didn’t have chance to impact the game.
Amorim was asked for a team news update during his post-match press conference and caused a degree of confusion when he mentioned Eriksen’s previous problem with his heart.
“Chris has the heart situation and we have to be really careful with that – it’s nothing about the heart! I’m just saying the heart rate has to be controlled because he has a fever,” said Amorim.
Amorim stressed Eriksen’s absence had “nothing” to do with his heart, but the player felt it was necessary to clarify his fitness situation by confirming that he was absent due to a virus.
“Looking ahead,” wrote Eriksen on Instagram. “I just wanted to thank everyone for the get well messages I’ve been receiving after missing the Spurs game. I picked up a virus like many people do at this time of year. Nothing serious and soon ready to get back to training.”
United play Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon and Eriksen is set to be involved in the squad, although Amorim will be without a few important first-team players again.
“It’s hard to know,” Amorim said when asked about the return dates of players. “Let’s wait a few more days. I think Leny [Yoro) and Chris [Eriksen] were sick, so they will recover. I think Kobbie [Mainoo] is out and Amad is for sure out, for the season. I think weeks [for Mainoo].”
Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and Luke Shaw has not started a club game in over a year. Mason Mount and Jonny Evans have been sidelined for two months, while reserve goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton are out with knocks.
