The connections of Make Me King pose with their trophies.
Doha: Sporting the colours of Wathnan Racing, the four-year-old, Make Me King (Dark Angel) landed the Gr.3 Barriere Prix Quincey at Deauville yesterday.
Ridden by James Doyle, the son of Dark Angel gave a first Group winner to trainer Hamad Al Jehani since he was based in Newmarket earlier this year.
Previously trained in France by Andre Fabre, Make Me King had his first run for new trainer Hamad Al Jehani last December in Doha.
With Top Gear (Wootton Bassett) leading the race at an even pace, Make Me King was about midfield behind Apax (Guignol).
Gradually closing on the leader, the superb gelding began to assert inside the final 150m to win by two and half lengths.
Top Gear was second while Sea Of Thieves (Cracksman) ran on for third.
“I’m very pleased for his trainer Hamad, that’s his first Group winner in Europe. He’s a top trainer in Qatar but it’s lovely to get him a good winner today. We were a little unsure about the ground, he did go on it, he was second to Continuous as a two-year-old which was good form and today was pretty much soft ground,” Doyle said after the win.
“We were hopeful rather than confident but what he needed was a good pace and he got it,” he added.
Bred by Haras Voltaire, he is out of a Listed winner Miss Infinity (Rock Of Gibraltar), who is a half sister to Gr.3 winner Unicorn Lion (No Nay Never) and a half sister to Gr.1 winner The Wow Signal (Starspangledbanner).
