French President Emmanuel Macron’s security detail has mistakenly been revealing his location, according to a report.
French newspaper Le Monde has reported that Macron is among the world leaders whose movements have been revealed publicly because of his security personnel’s usage of popular fitness app Strava.
While using the app, the default setting is that your movements and score will be shared publicly on the app’s platform. This mean that if you can trace the location of security personnel via the app, you would also know Macron’s location in real time.
“In other words, Macron’s bodyguards are unknowingly sharing their locations online, both personal and professional. This security flaw means it’s possible to track the French president’s bodyguards; that is, Macron’s hotels, meeting rooms and trips can be tracked through this app,” said the newspaper.
The details revealed by the bodyguards on Strava allowed the paper to track Macron’s bodyguards to a resort in Normandy, said the paper.
Macron dose not appear to be the only world leader to be tailed like this. The newspaper also reported that it appears that security personnel of Russian President Vladimir Putin and US First Lady Jill Biden have also similarly revealed locations.
On Strava, users can set their data and location to be private, but it’s set at public by default.
