Another opportunity was on the table for LSU men’s basketball in its Wednesday night matchup in the comfort of the Maravich Center.
The purple and gold Tigers hosted the No. 1 team in the land, Auburn, marking their fourth game against a Top 25 team this season. Turnovers and lack of offense put them behind early on in this one, digging themselves too deep in a hole to come back, eventually falling 87-74.
Leading LSU (12-8, 1-6 SEC) in the loss, as he has all season, was senior guard Cam Carter — who finished the game with a team-high 24 points. Despite his lights-out performance on what was the biggest stage yet this season, LSU couldn’t slay this giant.
For Auburn (19-1, 7-0) surviving another dogfight was the only thing on its mind as the most-hunted team in the nation. Leading them was senior forward Johni Broome who led all scorers with 26 points and all rebounders with 16. There was just no stopping Broome this go-round as Auburn’s win streak continued.

LSU 64, Auburn 74: Carter isn’t going down without a fight. The relentless guard is leading all scorers so far with 20 points doing all he can to close the gap. The only other LSU player with double-digit points besides him is Sears with 11 points.
LSU 56, Auburn 66: After getting as close as five points from tying the game up, LSU’s offense began to sputter out. It went on an almost three-minute scoring drought giving Auburn exactly what it needed to pull away once again. Auburn has only turned the ball over six times so far making not many mistakes for LSU to take advantage of.
LSU 52, Auburn 60: Auburn didn’t break a sweat once LSU closed the gap to just five points answering back in a hurry with buckets of its own. Leading it in the second half is Broome who had a quiet first half with just four points. He came alive scoring eight points to maintain Auburn’s lead.
LSU 50, Auburn 55: Senior guard Jordan Sears has been a beast coming off the bench for LSU since moving out of the starting lineup and he came alive in the second half. He led his team on a 7-0 run to close the gap to just five points with around 13 points to go in the half. Sears has shot two for two from deep including an and-one from deep.
LSU 38, Auburn 50: To open up the second half, Carter knocked down his second three-pointer of the game doing everything he could to get LSU back in the game. He has scored a team-high 14 points so far along with grabbing four rebounds. Despite his efforts, Auburn remains ahead by double digits.
LSU 29, Auburn 41: At the half, Auburn is in complete control despite shooting less than LSU from the field. Kelly hasn’t let up scoring 10 points leading his team while Broome is leading the team in rebounding with 11. Turnovers and the lack of offense as a whole have been killing LSU in the first half.
Carter is leading all scorers with 11 points but outside of him, LSU hasn’t had a ton of other offensive outlets. It doesn’t help that they have turned the ball over 15 times in the half leading to 15 points of turnovers for Auburn. It will need cleaner and more productive offense in the second half to close the 12-point gap.
LSU 24, Auburn 33: After being the aggressor in the first few minutes of the game, LSU took a back seat as the half continued. Along with being outrebounded 21-14 with three minutes remaining in the half, they are also taking way fewer shots than Auburn. Auburn has taken 34 shots to start the game compared to LSU’s 16-shot attempts.
Carter is still leading LSU’s offense with eight points so far while Kelly and Chad Baker-Mazara are leading Auburn with a combined 19 points.
LSU 16, Auburn 24: Going on a scoring drought against a team like Auburn is not ideal but after a flagrant one foul was called on Carter, LSU’s offense went cold. While it went on a three-minute drought, Auburn went on a 10-0 run led by guard Miles Kelly. Kelly has a game-high eight points leading all scorers.
LSU 16, Auburn 16: Turnovers and rebounding has become a problem for LSU as both teams’ defenses are swarming to the ball every chance they get. Past midway of the half, the Tigers are up to nine turnovers compared to Auburn’s five. They are also being outrebounded 13-6 allowing Auburn 11 offensive rebounds.
LSU 14, Auburn 11: The three-ball is landing for the purple and gold Tigers to start this one. They have shot 67% from beyond the arc in the first 10 minutes of the first half. Three different players have hit from deep so far.
LSU 6, Auburn 4: At the first media timeout, LSU is looking like the more aggressive team racking up two blocks and three steals. That led to a 6-0 run led by Carter with four points. Auburn closed the gap in a hurry though thanks to outrebounding LSU 9-1.
