Louisville basketball: Pat Kelsey on win over Boston College, Chucky Hepburn
Louisville Cardinals basketball coach Pat Kelsey discusses the team’s 84-58 win over Boston College without injured point guard Chucky Hepburn.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Chucky Hepburn, Louisville basketball‘s starting point guard, sat out the final 15 minutes and change of the Cardinals’ 84-58 win Wednesday night at Boston College after suffering an apparent lower-body injury.
Pat Kelsey did not have an update on the nature or severity of Hepburn’s injury after the victory.
“We’ll know more tomorrow,” the coach said. “The game just ended; I didn’t really have a lot of time to talk with the medical people yet.”
Hepburn appeared to tweak something while converting a layup that gave U of L (17-6, 10-2 ACC) a 44-35 lead with 15:16 remaining in regulation. After the play, he requested a sub, walked gingerly to the bench and spent a few minutes trying to work through the pain before heading back to the locker room with trainer Katie Creznic and several other staff members.
Hepburn rejoined his teammates after roughly five minutes in the locker room. Although he was still in uniform, and a team spokesperson labeled him “questionable” to return, Kelsey said the medical staff informed him that was not in the cards.
Hepburn is Louisville’s leading scorer, averaging 15.1 points per game on 41.9% shooting. He also ranks first in the ACC and among the top 15 across Division I when it comes to assists (6.4) and steals per game (2.4).
With Hepburn’s backup, Washington transfer Koren Johnson, out for the season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery, Terrence Edwards Jr. assumed point-guard duties while the Cards closed out the win — per a post on X, formerly Twitter, from statistician Kelly Dickey, their most lopsided in ACC play since an 82-54 victory at Wake Forest on Jan. 30, 2019. Edwards finished with 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting (1 for 3 from 3), eight rebounds, six assists against four turnovers, a block and a steal in 36 minutes.
U of L next plays at 2 p.m. Saturday against Miami at the KFC Yum! Center.
