A 7-year-old mare with more than 20 career races has died after suffering a racing injury at Los Alamitos, state horse racing officials reported Wednesday.
Sweet Sonny was injured during Sunday night’s third race, according to the California Horse Racing Board, which listed her death as “musculoskeletal.”
The official race chart says she took a “bad step,” pulled up and was ambulanced off the track.
She died on Monday, according to the CHRB.
Sweet Sonny is the 16th horse to die from a racing or training injury at the Cypress track this year.
Los Alamitos had 13 horses die from racing or training injuries in 2023.
