Loren K. Wood, 81, passed away at Pathways Hospice in Fort Collins, Colorado on August 6, 2024. Loren never fully recovered from a one car auto accident in March 2024.
Loren was born July 15, 1943 in Rochester, New York, to parents Nelson C. and Louise A. Wood. The Wood family which included brothers Britton D. and Craig A., longtime residents of Fredonia, moving there from Spencerport, New York in 1947. Loren graduated from Fredonia High School in 1961 where he excelled in all four sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track and field, He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of New York at Brockport in 1966 where he lettered in both basketball and baseball. He then enrolled in the physical education graduate program at the University of Indiana where he graduated with a Master of Science Degree in 1968.
Over the next ten years Loren held several university and high school teaching positions including schools in the Philippines, Australia, Canton (NY), and Wichita Falls (TX). In 1980 Loren enrolled in the physical education graduate program at the University of Utah where he graduated with his Doctorate Degree in 1987.
Over the next twenty years Loren held a variety of jobs before moving to Steamboat, Colorado shortly after selling the family home on Maple Avenue in Fredonia in 2005. He lived in Steamboat, Colorado until moving to Oak Creek, Colorado in 2017. Loren was inducted into the Fredonia High School Athletic Wall of Fame on July 3, 2008. He continued his athletic activities participating in triathlon and cross-country ski competitions. He qualified for and completed the 1983 Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Lailus Kona, Hawaii. He earned second place in the 1987 Great American Cross Country Ski Chase Series in the 40-44 age group.
Loren is survived by his brother Britton D. Wood and wife, Donna, and their son, Blair and his wife, Shannon, and their children Brynn and Skye; their son Todd and his wife, Kimberly; his brother Craig A. Wood and wife, Ellen T., and their son, Deron and his wife, Jennifer and their daughter Sabrina; their son Ryan and his wife, Christine and their daughters Avery and Kerry.
Loren was predeceased by his parents Nelson C. and Louise A. Wood. A short graveside service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on November 8th at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Fredonia, NY.
