Mike Gundy on Oklahoma State football loss at BYU: ‘Wish we could have got a stop at the end’
College football fans might’ve missed some early morning magic in Provo, Utah, on Saturday morning.
No. 13 BYU faced a first-and-10 from Oklahoma State’s 35-yard line with only 19 seconds left while trailing 38-35. The Cougars, undefeated, to that point, were tasked with somehow beating the Cowboys‘ full pass coverage defense late in the game.

And that’s exactly what BYU did, as quarterback Jake Retzlaff threw a 35-yard game-winning touchdown pass to Darius Lassiter with 10 seconds remaining at nearly 2 a.m. ET on Saturday morning. Lassiter caught a slant pass and juked out multiple Oklahoma State defenders to move BYU to 7-0 (4-0 Big 12).
Oklahoma State took a 35-31 lead with 1:13 remaining in the fourth quarter after seventh-year senior quarterback Alan Bowman found Brennan Presley for a six-yard touchdown.
BYU regained possession for the game-winning drive but wasn’t able to move the chains at first, needing a fourth-and-7 conversion on its own 28-yard line with 42 seconds remaining. The drive was setup by a big scramble from Retzlaff, who ran 27 yards before tossing the game-winning touchdown on the next place.
The Cougars are tied atop the Big 12 standings with No. 12 Iowa State (6-0, 3-0), with both programs being true College Football Playoff contenders. Meanwhile, the Cowboys, who were expected to compete for the Big 12 Championship this season, have lost four consecutive games, all of which have come in conference.
Retzlaff finished the game 13 of 26 passing for 218 yards with two touchdowns to two interceptions, also rushing for 81 yards and a score. BYU was led by running back LJ Martin, who took 20 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cougars nearly upset Oklahoma State last season in Stillwater, Oklahoma, but fell 40-34 in double overtime in the season finale. The 2024 meeting also had fireworks, but certainly went in BYU’s favor this time.
