Local shops welcome business as national tennis tournament draws crowds to Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — For over 80 years, Kalamazoo has been a premier destination for up-and-coming tennis players.
The United States Tennis Association Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships are happening at Kalamazoo College, and with it, an influx of friends and families of tennis players.
This means considerable out-of-area money will get put into the local economy. For one local shop owner, the crowds brought to town are a welcome sight.
“We just love having a tennis tournament in Kalamazoo and that these big names that are just getting started are coming to our city that’s really cool,” said Kathleen Widner, co-owner of the Spirit of Kalamazoo.
The prestigious tennis event has had big names such as John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and more.
According to Discover Kalamazoo, the estimated direct economic impact of the tournament is $1,357,589.
The USTA’s Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships continue until August 11.
