Denis Shapovalov will not collect any prize money from the Citi Open following his default from the competition.

The Canadian faced Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals of the ATP Tour tournament on Friday in the United States capital, Washington D.C.

He lost the first set 7-5 and then took the second to another tiebreak but eventually saw his chances of victory diminish.

Shelton held a triple match point after his opponent hit the net, with Shapovalov throwing his racket down on the court in frustration.

Moments later, he appeared to say something towards a member of the crowd, including a reportedly expletive word.

The umpire issued a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct and then summoned an ATP supervisor to the court.

Shapovalov protested to the umpire regarding what he said to the crowd member, saying: “What do you mean? He’s talking to me.

“What are you talking about? Give me a code but don’t call the supervisor!”

The umpire explained to the supervisor that he didn’t know what was said between Shapovalov and the fan but the latter believes he was provoked.

“I heard it,” said Shelton, before it was announced that Shapovalov had been defaulted and therefore lost the match.

The Canadian seemingly stood in disbelief at his baseline, with some members of the crowd also booing.

Shapovalov’s default means he will lose all his ranking points from the week as well as his $53,240 [£41,294] in prize money, as per Perfect Tennis.

Even though he was handed the win, Shelton was also confused with the decision before embracing his opponent at the net.

Shapovalov further expressed his anger with his default when he said to the supervisor: “This is not fair, I worked so hard all my life…”

He was previously disqualified at the Davis Cup in 2017 when he went to hit a ball into the crowd in frustration but instead hit umpire Arnaut Gabas’ left eye.

Shelton had previously beaten Radu Albot and Brandon Nakashima before Friday, and now faces Flavio Cobolli in the semi-final.

Victory would see him play either Frances Tiafoe or Sebastian Korda in what will be an all-American final.
