NASHPORT, Ohio – Hunter Swidzinski is sitting in the top 10, and Longwood men’s golf holds on to third through nearly two rounds at the Virtues Intercollegiate on Saturday at the Virtues Golf Club, hosted by Bowling Green.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled for 54 holes, was suspended due to darkness before players had a chance to finish their second round of the day, and the tournament committee elected to make the event a 36-hole tournament due to adverse weather conditions throughout the region.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
The Lancers sit third in the 14-team field, behind only James Madison and Michigan, despite battling the elements all day as rain and wind made for challenging rounds of golf.
Longwood has a two-stroke lead over Marshall in fourth and is 12 strokes back of James Madison. The Lancers were tied with both Marshall and JMU after one round, but the second round proved to be a challenge throughout the 91-player field.
Swidzinski continued his sizzling start to his collegiate career with a three-under 69 in the first round. He had an eagle and a trio of birdies. He was even through 12 holes in round two before play was suspended.
Justin LaRue posted a two-under 70 in the first round and stayed even through 12 holes in the second round. He is tied for eighth
Scott Jordan sits tied for 13th at one under midway through the second round. He carded a three-under 69 in the first round as well. In his second round, he has finished 12 holes prior to the suspension of play.
Zane Moore sits in the top half of the field, tied for 45th, and is four over with four holes to play in the event. David LaFreniere is tied for 68th.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“It’s not easy to do in adverse conditions, but I thought we did a good job of staying patient and keeping our focus on what we were doing right now for much of the day,” said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. “That’s especially true, considering that three of our guys played half the holes out here for the first time today. Something bad happened to every player in the field at some point, each of us included, and we were able to fight our way past those moments for the most part.”
“What we didn’t handle very well was after the decision was made that play would be suspended,” Fillman added. “While we can argue whether the stoppage time was too late or not, it doesn’t matter because that’s the decision the tournament committee made. Hopefully play will be able to resume in the morning, and, when it does, we’ll be able to put how the closing holes from this evening went behind us and come out and finish this thing off well.”
