After splitting the 2023-24 season between the Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies, point guard Jordan Goodwin reportedly will get the chance to earn a spot on the roster of another Western Conference squad.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Goodwin agreed to a training camp with the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.
Goodwin spent the first half of the season with the Suns and appeared in 40 games before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a three-team trade. The Nets waived him the day after acquiring him, and he signed with the Grizzlies on a 10-day contract on Feb. 13 before receiving a two-way contract on Feb. 24.
In 17 games in Memphis, Goodwin made a career-high 12 starts and averaged 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 29.3 minutes of action, all of which were the best marks of his career. His best performance of the year came against the Lakers when he dropped 23 points, 17 rebounds and four steals in a 123-120 loss.
Goodwin will be joining a Los Angeles team that is entering a new era under first-year head coach JJ Redick. The 40-year-old is replacing Darvin Ham, who led the team to a 47-35 record last year before it fell to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs.
Goodwin is tenacious on the glass and brings a unique source of rebounding for his size at 6’4″, so perhaps he will be able to earn a spot in the Lakers’ backcourt ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
Los Angeles is hoping to contend for a title, so having a depth piece like Goodwin could go a long way.
