Junior Kyra Ly had the greatest day in Oregon State women’s golf history as she streaked to the 36-hole lead at the Causeway Invitational lead in Sacramento.
Ly set a school record Monday morning with a 7-under 65 at Del Paso Country Club, breaking the mark of 66 held by three former Beavers. Then, during Monday’s afternoon round, Ly followed with a 66.
Ly’s 36-hole score of 13-under 131 was good for a five-stroke lead with one round remaining. The 131 and 13-under are also Oregon State records. The school’s 54-hole record is 11-under.
Ly, a Cleveland High graduate, made five birdies and an eagle on the way to her 65. Starting her round at No. 6, Ly made a birdie, but was only 1-under through seven holes before beginning an assault on the par-72, 6,143-yard Del Paso. Ly eagled at 13, followed by birdies on four of the final five holes of the back nine. Ly finished her 65 with five consecutive pars.
During the afternoon round, Ly made seven birdies with a bogey for a 66, sharing the former school record with Ellie Slama, Nicole Schroeder and Olivia Benzin.
After two rounds of the 12-team tournament, Oregon State is tied for first with Sacramento State at 14-under. The Beavers’ second-round score of 10-under 278 is the second lowest in school history.
