Oh, what could have been. When former Ohio State quarterback, Kyle McCord, committed to Ohio State and eventually became the starter, many hoped the story would end in Big Ten titles and a national championship or two. Instead, McCord showed promise but never really made the coaching staff or fans feel like he was the answer. Right or wrong, that narrative led to his transfer to Syracuse where he then led the country in passing last season.
Meanwhile, OSU turned to a transfer of its own in former Kansas State quarterback, Will Howard, who took Ohio State all the way to a College Football Playoff national championship in his first and only season in Columbus. The jury is out on whether or not McCord could have led a Scarlet and Gray revival like what we saw from Howard.
So then, one has to wonder how McCord felt watching his former team go on “the Greatest Run in College Football History” when it beat the likes of Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame, to secure its ninth national championship in program history.
Well, since you asked … McCord just so happens to be enjoying his time in the limelight this week at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Part of that is going through some Olympic-type events, but getting in front of the media and answering questions is also a big part. The former Buckeye was asked about his feelings while watching OSU bring home the ultimate prize while in front of the press, and he was more than happy to let everyone know that he was rooting for the Buckeyes.
“It was awesome,” McCord said Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “I mean, obviously, those are my guys, so seeing them accomplish that goal was sweet, knowing how bad they worked for it. I had a great year and they had a great year and so it was just cool to see everybody win, to be honest.”
McCord went on to say that the move ended up looking beneficial for both he and the Ohio State program. He also credited OSU for his development and saw his chances to improve no matter where he was in Year 2.
“I knew regardless if I was at Ohio State or Syracuse, I was going to make a big jump from year one to year two. I was very confident in that,” McCord said. “I think having a year of experience starting at Ohio State under my belt, I don’t think you can get much more prepared than that. That’s great experience. And so just using that and learning from it, I was super critical watching myself from Ohio State and attacking the areas that I needed to improve upon, and the success that I had last year really wasn’t a surprise to me.”
If you’ve read our stuff here on Buckeyes Wire, you know we were believers in McCord. Sometimes it just takes time to develop into a finished product. For whatever reason though, it was clear that Day was frustrated with his play at times in 2023 and was ready to move on. We should all be supportive of McCord and what he turned into and wish him nothing but the best going forward.
