Kohl’s has been struggling. The Wisconsin-based retail chain announced earlier this month that they were closing 27 stores in 15 states. They’ve also had three different CEOs in the last few years.
Kohl’s corporate headquarters employs roughly 4,000 workers in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Menomonee Falls is a suburb of Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that about 400 positions were eliminated according to a statement from Kohls. Of those jobs, half were open positions that had not been filled yet. Affected workers were given two weeks’ pay along with what Kohl’s describes as a “competitive severance package.”
Current CEO Ashly Buchanan’s message to workers was that the store closings and layoffs were made to improve the strength of the company.
Kohl’s currently operates 42 stores in Wisconsin. None of the locations were included in the store closings announced in January. Minnesota locations also were not affected.
States where Kohl’s has closed stores include Alabama, Arkansas, 10 stores in California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. The store closings came after a 51% drop in Kohl’s stocks.
