Kim Barnes Arico surpasses John Beilein as Michigan basketball’s winningest coach with win over Indiana

Kim Barnes Arico is in a class of her own.

With a come-from-behind 70-67 win over Indiana Wednesday at the Crisler Center, the 13-year Michigan women’s basketball coach surpassed John Beilein as the winningest Michigan basketball — men’s and women’s — coach.

Following the win, the Wolverines held a postgame celebration on the court while presenting her with a banner that appeared to have included each of her 279 wins at Michigan written into the block “M.”

A 31-point fourth quarter proved to be the difference maker in Wednesday’s victory for the Wolverines, who moved to 9-5 in Big Ten play and extended their win streak to four. Senior guard Jordan Hobbs led Michigan in scoring on the night with 24 points on an efficient 10 of 13 shooting from the field, adding seven rebounds and three assists.

Barnes Arico, who was hired away by Michigan in 2012 from St. John’s, is 279-139 all-time across her 13 seasons in Ann Arbor. Her first win at Michigan came on Nov. 9, 2012 against Detroit Mercy.

In her 13 seasons manning the sidelines of the women’s basketball program, Barnes Arico has led the Wolverines to seven NCAA Tournament appearances. The Wolverines are currently on path to their fifth straight trip to March Madness under Barnes Arico, as ESPN’s Charlie Creme has Michigan projected as a No. 7 seed in his latest bracketology projections.

Beilein went 278-150 all-time in his 12 seasons at the helm of the Michigan men’s basketball team from 2007-08 to 2018-19.

Barnes Arcio will go for win No. 280 on Monday, Feb. 17 when Michigan travels to College Park, Maryland to take on No. 15 Maryland.
