Kentucky’s Mark Pope breaks down loss to No .1 Auburn
Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope breaks down what went wrong in loss to No. 1 Auburn. The Tigers won for the first time at Rupp since 1988.
LEXINGTON — Kentucky basketball will honor six seniors tonight at Rupp Arena, prior to the team’s matchup with LSU. Those who will be honored during senior night festivities include guards Lamont Butler, Koby Brea and Jaxson Robinson, forwards Ansley Almonor and Andrew Carr and center Amari Williams.
During his weekly radio show Monday night, coach Mark Pope said another senior, guard Kerr Kriisa (who hasn’t played since Dec. 7), will not participate in senior night; Kriisa has an opportunity to redshirt and return to the Wildcats for a sixth college season in 2025-26 after appearing in only nine games so far in 2024-25.
This won’t be Williams’ first senior night experience, though, as he also took part in the ceremony last season at his previous school, Drexel.
“It’s just knowing how to manage the emotion between the two,” Williams said. “It’s going to be a weird night, knowing that it’s the last (time at Rupp), but also you’ve got to be mentally prepared for the game coming up five minutes after.”
Williams, who is from Nottingham, England, said his mother, Sharon Williams, will be in attendance tonight. Almonor said his father and mother, as well as his brother, sister and sister-in-law, will be on hand.
“So grateful and thankful for the opportunity to be able to play here, play for this prestigious program,” Almonor said, “and I can’t wait to go out there one more time.”
Can the Wildcats (19-10, 8-8 SEC) send off the seniors on a high note? Or will the Tigers (14-15, 3-13) pull off the upset and author an unhappy ending for the hosts’ senior class?
