Barnes, the co-favorite in Las Vegas futures for Kentucky Derby 2025, worked a bullet Tuesday morning at Santa Anita.
The Into Mischief colt trained by Bob Baffert worked five furlongs in 58.8 seconds, fastest of 47 at the distance. His previous work was 10 days ago, when he went five furlongs in 59.8 seconds.
Bought as a yearling for $3.2 million by Zedan Racing, Barnes debuted in November, winning a maiden special weight at Churchill Downs by a head. He returned in the Grade 2 San Vicente on Jan. 4 and won by 5 1/2 lengths.
Barnes is the second individual choice on the morning line for pool 4 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which was announced Tuesday morning. Stablemate Citizen Bull, top choice in the KDFW, is the co-favorite in Las Vegas futures for the Kentucky Derby.
One other horse in the Vegas futures, Shea Brennan at 75-1, worked five furlongs in 1:00.6 at Santa Anita on Tuesday morning. It was the seventh fastest of 47 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed second in the California Chrome Cal Cup Derby going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on Jan. 18 for trainer Phil D’Amato.
