Saturday’s Grade 3, 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Derby will be drawn Wednesday, but until then, let’s take a look at the probable contenders’ speed figures. Horse Racing Nation‘s Stakes Tracker lists six 3-year-old colts as pointing for this final Tampa Bay Downs stop on the Derby trail, which offers 50-25-15-10-5 points to the top five finishers.
The Tampa Bay Derby has produced two Kentucky Derby winners, Street Sense in 2007 and Super Saver, who finished third but came out wearing the roses on Derby day in 2010. Other notable winners are Tapwrit, the 2017 Belmont Stakes winner, and 2024 winner Domestic Product, who finished in third in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
The top HRN speed figure of 123 is shared by two contenders. The first, Chancer McPatrick, a Grade 1 winner at 2 who last was seen finishing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, is making his 3-year-old debut for trainer Chad Brown. The other horse is Patch Adams, who recently finished fourth in the Southwest (G3) for trainer Brad Cox. Sired by Into Mischief, Patch Adams also holds the top Beyer Speed Figure, 98, and the top Brisnet Speed Rating of 102.
The top TimeformUS figure of 118 goes to Owen Almighty, the Brian Lynch trainee who finished second to John Hancock in the Sam F. Davis at Tampa last month.
Here are the six Stakes Tracker contenders and their top speed figures.
