Racing in the back of the field through the first turn
before lurking in third up the backstretch, Burnham Square made a strong
closing move through the second turn and down the short homestretch to win
Saturday’s Grade 3, $265,000 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
The top five finishers in the 1 1/16-mile race earned
20-10-6-4-2 points toward qualifying for Kentucky Derby 2025.

Forced to take Burnham Square (4-1) back coming out of the
widest post in the field of seven 3-year-olds, jockey Édgard Zayas save ground
along the rail through the first six furlongs of the two-turn test.

After early leader Kinetic Control (13-1) gave way to Guns
Loaded (5-1) and then to post-time favorite Tappan Street (8-5) through early fractions
of 23.42, 47.60 and 1:11.69 on the fast main track, Burnham Square took the
lead around the point where the mile went in 1:35.79. He drew off to about a 2
1/2-length victory with a time of 1:43.60.
Tappan Street finished second, Burning Glory (8-1) third, Ferocious
(2-1) a troubled fourth and He’s Not Joking (27-1) fifth.
A Whitham Thoroughbreds homebred colt by Liam’s Map, Burnham
Square broke his maiden with a nine-length win on third asking Dec. 28 at
Gulfstream Park. It was the first time trainer Ian Wilkes raced him with
blinkers, which were on again Saturday.
Burnham Square finished second in his six-furlong debut Oct.
26 at Keeneland and third in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race Nov. 30 at Churchill Downs.
