The west division of the Kentucky Derby 2025 scouting report provides a list of prospects for the 2025 run for the roses. The division includes Derby prep races that are run in California and New Mexico. That means stakes at Santa Anita, Los Alamitos, Del Mar and Sunland.
Since the road to the Derby began in September, 10 official points races were run and three of them were won by horses in this division. Citizen Bull won twice for Bob Baffert in the Grade 1 American Pharoah and the Breeders’ Cup and Journalism was first in last weekend’s Los Alamitos Futurity (G2).
From the eight horses listed in this first west division report, trainer Bob Baffert has five and Michael McCarthy has two. Into Mischief and Curlin are the top sires in this report, each with a pair of promising 2-year-olds.
