LAHAINA, Hawaii – Kansas men’s golf moved up three spots on the leaderboard Sunday, moving into a tie for second place at the conclusion of the second round of the Ka’anapali Classic.  

 

Kansas was led by senior Gunnar Broin who shot a team-low 66, good for five under par. Junior Luke Honner finished behind Broin with a three-under-par round of 68. Sophomore Noah Holtzman shot a 69 (-2), junior Will King fired a second-round 70 (-1) and sophomore Max Jelinek shot a 73 (+2). 

 

“We got off to a fast start today and played the first nine holes in fairly calm conditions,” Kansas Head Coach Jamie Bermel said. “I’m proud of the effort from the guys. Gunnar had a really solid day and Luke, Noah and Will were fairly steady.” 

 

Broin got things going early, as he started things off with a birdie, and then three more birdies to follow on his opening nine, as he carded a front nine 35. Broin tallied three more birdies on his back nine and stayed bogey-free on his way to shooting a second-round 66. He sits in 12th place for the tournament, at seven under.  

 

Honner tallied five birdies in a row during holes five through nine to ride a hot streak. He carried the momentum over to his back nine, where he grabbed another birdie and six pars, on his way to carding a three-under round of 68. Honner moved up 22 spots on the leaderboard during round two, as he is now in 31st.  

Holtzman was another Jayhawk who played steady golf throughout the second round of play and eagled the ninth hole. Holtzman used that eagle and 13 pars en route to firing off a two-under round of 69. Holtzman is in a tie for 24th place and five under for the tournament.  

 

King used a combination of steady and aggressive golf to tally nine pars and five birdies on his way to shooting a second-round 70, good for one under par. King moved to five under for the tournament and is in a tie for 24th place along with Holtzman.  

Jelinek shot a two-over round of 73 which consisted of three birdies and has him in a tie for 32nd at -4.

Freshman Felix Bouchard, who is competing for Kansas as an individual, is T100 at +5.

 

Kansas moved up three spots on the tournament leaderboard as a team as the Jayhawks are tied with Indiana at 26 under par for the tournament. No. 2 Oklahoma leads the way at 31 under par, and North Florida and Colorado round out the top five.
