Kandoo Kid, at 8-1, came through under a perfectly timed ride by Harry Cobden to collar the front-running Broadway Boy in the Coral Gold Cup, giving Paul Nicholls, his trainer, his first win in the race since the outstanding Denman’s second triumph in 2009.
The winner, an eight-year-old grey, was racing beyond three miles for the first time and was ridden patiently as Broadway Boy led the field, before easing ahead on the run to the final fence.
He stayed on strongly to give Cobden a first success in the feature event of Newbury’s National Hunt season, with Broadway Boy (4-1 fav) just under two lengths away at the line and Victtorino (5-1) another three and a half lengths behind in third.
At Newcastle, Sir Gino, the 6-5 joint-favourite, was an impressive winner of the Grade One Fighting Fifth Hurdle, smoothly taking advantage of a lacklustre run by Mystical Power, his main market rival, to come home eight lengths clear.
Nicky Henderson’s four-year-old, a stand-in at Newcastle for his stable companion, Constitution Hill, after the 2023 Champion Hurdle winner suffered a minor training setback, is now 3-1 second-favourite for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.
Lossiemouth, who is due to run for the first time this autumn in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse on Sunday, remains favourite for the Champion at around 5-2, with the reigning champion, State Man, who runs in the same colours as Sir Gino, out to 4-1 to defend his crown.
Constitution Hill, a possible runner in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day, is now the fourth-choice in the ante-post betting at 9-2.
