MONTERREY – Senior Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque holds the individual lead after the first day of the Monterrey Collegiate Classic to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team on Friday at Club Campestre.
The tournament is using a unique format that features teams playing 27 holes on each day of the event. Duque opened with a first round six-under par 66 using an eagle, five birdies, 11 pars, and a bogey. Duque followed that with a five-under 31 in the back nine of his second round with an eagle, three birdies, and five pars as he sits with a 27-hole score of 97.
Junior Arthit Kruaprayong is tied for 19th after 27 holes with a score of 106 after posting a first round even par 72 and a 34 through nine holes in the second round. Junior Luis Limón, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 28th with a 27-hole score of 108 after posting a first round round even par 72 and a 36 through nine holes in the second round.
Sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Esteban Gonzalez is tied for 47th with a 27-hole score of 111 as he posted a first round 75 and has posted an even par 36 through nine holes in the second round. Redshirt senior Taj Sutherland is tied for 57th with a 27-hole score of 113 with a first round 78 and a one-under 35 through nine holes in the second round. Sophomore Emilio Gil Leyva is tied for 68th with a 27-hole score of 116 with a first round 74 and a 42 through nine holes in the second.
As a team, UTRGV is in fourth place with a 27-hole score of 423 after posting a one-under 287 and is currently eight-under through nine holes in the second round. UTRGV trails Loyola Marymount by just five strokes.
The Vaqueros will be back on the course for the final 27 holes on Saturday with the first group teeing off at 7 a.m.
