This week, the PGA Tour returned to Colorado’s Castle Pines Golf Club for the first time in 18 years. On Thursday at BMW Championship, the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings battled the unique challenge of altitude golf, with tee shots soaring well over 400 yards and routine short irons airmailing greens. While the mile-high conditions at Castle Pines gave some players fits, they didn’t befuddle legendary Denver Broncos QBs John Elway and Peyton Manning, both of whom have logged aces at the Jack Nicklaus-designed course in the past. Here’s their stories [clip begins around the 28-second mark].
What are the odds an NFL franchise’s two most successful quarterbacks have both made hole-in-ones on the same golf course? We’re going to guess they’re pretty slim, apart from maybe Jim Kelly and Josh Allen. Interestingly enough, Manning’s came first, during his first year in Denver back in 2012. Manning ace’d the 7th hole and it proved to be a good omen, as the veteran QB went on to earn NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors that season.
Elway’s story is equally great, and much more recent. The back-to-back Super Bowl winner says he made a hole-in-one on Castle Pines’ 16th hole on his 64th birthday back in June. That’s not a bad way to celebrate another trip around the sun.
Needless to say, there’s some pretty good mojo working for Broncos QBs at Castle Pines. Something tells us Bo Nix we’ll be hunting for a tee time any day now.
