CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. (WITN) – Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Cape Lookout are among the North Carolina National Parks to see job cuts under the Trump Administration’s plans to reduce the size of the federal government workforce.
According to Bill Wade, Executive Director for the Association of National Park Rangers, six probationary employees have been let go from Cape Hatteras and one from Cape Lookout.
Wade says depending on the positions that were cut in each park, visitor center hours or days could be reduced, along with ranger-led programs. He says custodial operations such as cleaning restrooms, trash and litter pickup could be reduced. In areas with entrance stations and fee collection, lanes could be reduced leading to longer lines.
Other national parks impacted in NC are:
Blue Ridge Parkway – at least 1 (likely more)
Great Smoky Mountains – 12
Carl Sandburg Home – 1
Wright Brothers/Fort Raleigh – no information
Moores Creek – 1
Guilford Courthouse – no information
