Matt Kuchar managed to steal the show on Sunday evening at the Wyndham Championship despite being seven shots behind with one hole to play. While everyone around him finished their rounds to end a waterlogged week in Greensboro, the nine-time PGA Tour winner picked up his golf ball and went home. Or, rather, to his rental home.
Although Kuchar didn’t have a trophy or a FedEx Cup Playoffs spot to play for, he wanted to finish the 72nd hole in better light to give himself the best chance of collecting a bigger check. He told Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis he was also “trying to set an example” for Max Greyserman that he didn’t have to finish. Greyserman’s damage had already been done, though, so he did finish to record a solo second to Aaron Rai.
Anyway, Kuchar was within his rights to stop given the fading daylight and how much money was still on the line (he wound up making par to finish T-12 and earn $134,695), but that doesn’t mean the decision didn’t rub a lot of people the wrong way considering how many people he was going to potentially inconvenience on Monday morning. Not to mention the fact he’s made nearly $60 million in on-course earnings in his career. Let’s just say his choice was about as popular on Golf Twitter as his decision to tip that local caddie only $5K after winning nearly $1.3 million at the 2018 Mayakoba Classic.
It also prompted a perfect dig from Jim Nantz regarding the bizarre situation.
“I don’t expect we’ll be bringing you that coverage tomorrow,” the legendary CBS announcer quipped. Nailed it.
Anyway, good luck to Matt on Monday morning. We just wouldn’t order any food at the golf course if we were him.
