Jets rookie tackle Olu Fashanu’s season will end on the injured reserve list.
Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich announced that Fashanu will be placed on the list after injuring his foot. Ulbrich initially said that Fashanu will need to have surgery to address his plantar fasciitis, but the team later clarified that Fashanu is expected to heal on his own.
Fashanu was a first-round pick in April and saw time at right tackle and right guard before stepping in at left tackle in the wake of Tyron Smith’s season-ending injury.
“It’s unfortunate,” Ulbrich said, via the Associated Press. “He’s having a great rookie season. But at the same time, these injuries sometimes give you an opportunity to step back and really start absorbing some of the information as you were kind of thrown into the fire. He’ll use it as an opportunity to grow, I know that.”
Given Smith’s age, injury history and lack of contract for next season, Fashanu will likely be pencilled in as the starter at left tackle for the 2025 season.
