The Jets defense might have a different man in the middle Thursday night against the Patriots.
Linebacker C.J. Mosley was officially listed as questionable on Wednesday.
He has not participated in the limited practices the Jets have had this week due to a toe injury he suffered in Tennessee.
Jets coach Robert Saleh indicated Tuesday that Mosley may go through a pregame workout to see if he can play.
If Mosley is unavailable, Jamien Sherwood will start in his place and be the defensive player with the speaker in his helmet to take the calls from the coaches.
Sherwood filled in Sunday against the Titans after Mosley went down in the first half.
“Super comfortable with Jamien,” Saleh said. “He’s done a phenomenal job developing as a professional football player. Full confidence in him to call the defense, make the checks that need to be made. He’s got elite mental speed and elite communication skills, so not worried about him playing ball at all.”
The Jets other injury news was positive.
Cornerbacks D.J. Reed (knee) and Michael Carter II (ankle) practiced Wednesday and did not have an injury designation.
Reed missed the Titans game and Carter exited the game.
The Giants drew a lot of attention this week for their kicking situation.
They had to turn to punter Jamie Gillan to kick after Graham Gano was injured on the opening kickoff. Gillan missed an extra point attempt and the Giants then went for two points the rest of the game.
Jets punter Thomas Morstead does prepare for that situation.
He has never had to kick an extra point or field goal in his career but has kicked off 546 times in his career, mainly with the Saints. He kicked off six times last season for the Jets when Greg Zuerlein was hurt.
“I do work on it here and there just to be ready,” Morstead said. “But it’s not to be a technician but to be ready to do it and just make sure I’m conditioned to actually do it in a game.”
Morstead was a kicker and a punter in college at SMU and 37 of his 53 field goal attempts in college.
“I stay ready,” Morstead said. “I’d like to score a point before my career is over.”
The Patriots declared four players out for Thursday’s game: LB Ja’Whaun Bentley (shoulder), OT Vederian Lowe (knee), G Sidy Sow (ankle) and LB Oshane Ximines (knee).
