Jessica Pegula continues her quest for a first title of the season with a commanding display at the ATX Open.
Following some disappointing results at the Australian Open and in the Middle East, the 31-year-old has returned to home soil looking to build some form and momentum.
Jessica Pegula is the top seed at Texas’ ATX Open and she has certainly lived up to that billing so far.
She faced Anna Blinkova in the quarter-finals and she went on to produce one of her best performances of the season to date.
Pegula faced Blinkova, and was determined to turn the tables after losing to the Russian for the first time at the 2024 Indian Wells Masters.
In Texas, the World number four was dominant from the start and surged into a 4-1 lead. Despite Blinkova breaking Pegula’s serve to make it 5-2, the American broke back in the next game to seal the first set.
In set two Pegula raced out to a 5-1 lead, and though Blinkova saved a match point before holding serve, Pegula soon claimed victory 6-2, 6-2 in just 58 minutes to reach the ATX Open semi-finals.
This result means Pegula has equalled the best result for an American player at the tournament, with Danielle Collins and Katie Volynets also reaching the last four in 2023.
In the ATX Open semi-finals, Pegula will face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanović.
In her last match the three-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist saved match points against qualifier Ena Shibahara to advance.
Pegula has played Tomljanović on three occasions and lost twice, but she did win their most recent encounter at the 2024 United Cup.
Tomljanović has been blighted by injuries during her career but she is building some momentum in Texas, and she does not plan on that coming to an end against Pegula.
“I think not dwelling too long on mistakes (is important),” she said. “In the last three matches, I really liked how I fought back in games that I was down love-30 or love-40 and won them.
“I think last year I had a lot of those games and would just, almost kind of let them go. (Now) I’m digging really deep.
“I think I’m playing at a good level, but I still feel like the ceiling is high with literally every shot in the book. It’s a fine time to be out on the practice court right now.”
