Pegula is one win away from becoming the first woman in the Open Era to win the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open back-to-back. The American is through to the final in Cincy and has been playing non-stop for the last two weeks.

She’s picked the right time to go for the double, as it will become even more difficult to win both tournaments from next year. Canada and Cincinnati are the last remaining ATP and WTA 1000 tournaments which are only one week long. But from 2025, they will be extended to 12 to 13 days, in line with the likes of Indian Wells and the Madrid Open.

While Pegula has sometimes seen the upsides to the extended two-week events, she isn’t a fan. “I’m not crazy about two-week tournaments,” she said after reaching the Cincinnati final.

“Of course, when the weather is bad and the playing time is compressed it’s terrible and you wish you had more time. Other times you’re like, ‘Why is it two weeks?’” While the world No. 6 can see both sides, she admitted it wasn’t the right idea in the immediate lead-up to the US Open.

Pegula continued: “It can go either way, I don’t know which is better. I think we’ll continue to see tournaments grow and offer more money. But two long tournaments in a row and then the US Open is not ideal.”
