LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior Will King and recent KU graduate Davis Cooper represented the KU men’s golf program as they were selected as 2023-24 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Thursday.
“I’m really proud of these two guys,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We are extremely busy during the fall and spring semesters, and they continue to find a way to take care of their academics along with their golf game.”
Cooper became just the second Jayhawk ever to earn All-America honors in three-consecutive seasons, joining former KU golfer Ben Sigel, who earned the nod in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Cooper joins the elite company with honors in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
For the 2023-24 season, Cooper carried a 73.62 scoring average and finished inside of the Top 20 on two occasions. This past year, the Overland Park, Kansas native competed in 13 events, 37 rounds and posted four rounds in the 60’s. Cooper ranked third on the KU squad with eight rounds under par. Cooper finished up his sport management major with a 3.67 cumulative grade point average (GPA), graduating from KU in May 2024.
King makes his GCAA All-America Scholar debut thanks to a 4.0 cumulative GPA after completing his sophomore year at KU. The molecular, cellular & developmental biology major from Olathe, Kansas, carried a 72.24 stroke average for the 2023-24 season and claimed his first collegiate individual title at the Gopher Invitational (-8) on Sept 11.
King had a team-high 14 rounds under par and fired off the lowest round for a Kansas golfer with a 65 (-6) in the opening round of the Ka’anapali Classic last November. King placed tied for eighth at the 2024 Big 12 Championship and was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.
Cooper and King become the 10th and 11th Jayhawk under Bermel to earn All-America Scholar honors. Additionally, Cooper and King were both named to the 2024 Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
To be eligible, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I. In addition, they must participate in 50 percent of their team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2. Recipients must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their respective universities.
Kansas will open its 2024-25 campaign at the Folds of Honor Collegiate, Sept. 9-11, at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan.
