Jasprit Bumrah won the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2024 award on Tuesday, January 28. The 31-year-old fast bowler was in red-hot form for India in 2024. He played 13 Tests and picked up 71 wickets, which was the most by any bowler, and in eight T20Is, Bumrah accounted for the dismissal of 15 batters. Bumrah played a big role in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 title win, and for his outstanding display with the ball, he won the Player of the Tournament award as well.
Before being crowned as the winner of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy on Tuesday, Bumrah won the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award on Monday, January 27. Bumrah is the fifth Indian men’s player to win the ICC Cricketer of the Year award.
Former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid won the ICC Cricketer of the Year award in 2004. Dravid scored 1241 runs in nine Tests and 752 runs in 22 ODIs for India during the 2003-04 season. For his red-hot form in Test cricket, Dravid also won the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award that year.
Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar won the ICC Cricketer of the Year award in 2010. In the 2009-10 season, Tendulkar scored 674 runs in seven Tests and 703 runs in 14 ODIs for the Indian men’s cricket team. Tendulkar was 37 years old in 2010, and he holds the record for being the oldest cricketer to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.
R Ashwin won the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year awards in 2016. Ashwin, who announced his retirement from international cricket last month, played 12 Tests, 2 ODIs, and 17 T20Is in 2016 and picked up 72, 2, and 23 wickets in addition to scoring 612, 1, and 46 runs, respectively. He was the first Indian bowler and only spinner so far to win the top prize.
Virat Kohli won his first ICC Cricketer of the Year award in 2017 and followed it up with one more in 2018. He is one of the three cricketers to win two Sir Garfield Sobers Trophies and only the second cricketer after Ricky Ponting to win two in a row. In 2017, Kohli scored 1059 runs in 10 Tests, 1460 runs in 26 ODIs, and 299 runs in 10 ODIs. In 2018, the former India captain amassed a total of 1322 runs in 13 Tests, 1202 runs in 14 ODIs, and 211 runs in 10 T20Is.
Jasprit Bumrah became the first Indian and fourth fast bowler overall to win the ICC Cricketer of the Year award on Tuesday. Bumrah finished as the highest wicket-taker in 2024. He accounted for the dismissal of 71 batters in 13 Tests and picked up 15 wickets in eight T20Is.
