The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) aims to boost tourism by collaborating with Qatar, highlighting the positive impact of the visa waiver for Qatari citizens in increasing visitor numbers to Japan, according to a report by Gulf Times. JNTO is set to participate in the upcoming Qatar Travel Mart (QTM) as part of this effort, which is anticipated to benefit both economies.
Daisuke Kobayashi, JNTO’s executive director, was quoted as saying, “The number of Qatari visitors to Japan has increased significantly. Between January and June 2024, we welcomed 1,926 Qatari nationals, reflecting a 17.3% rise compared to the same time frame last year.”
The visa exemption for Qatari citizens, effective August 21, 2023, allows them to apply online for an electronic visa through the Embassy of Japan in Doha, facilitating travel.
Kobayashi emphasised JNTO’s goal of providing diverse experiences throughout Japan to support sustainable tourism growth while enhancing the quality of visits for tourists and local communities. Their participation in QTM, scheduled for November 25-27, will showcase the latest trends in various tourism sectors.
He also commented on the importance of fostering strong relationships with airlines and travel agencies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to position Japan as a preferred leisure destination. He noted that while many in the Gulf associate Japan with cherry blossoms, the country’s 47 prefectures each offer unique attractions and seasonal experiences worth exploring.
Addressing the concern of over tourism in Japan, Kobayashi updated that JNTO is promoting lesser-known regions so as to broaden travel opportunities beyond the traditional “Golden Route” of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. This new travel focus enables visitors to experience the unique charms of Japan’s hidden gems, ultimately fostering a more balanced influx of travellers.
