UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis pre-NC State press conference
UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis had a press conference on Friday at the Smith Center to discuss the Tar Heels’ upcoming game at N.C. State.
RALEIGH — Jalen Washington had the go-ahead dunk and the game-ending block as UNC basketball earned a thrilling 63-61 win against N.C. State on Saturday at the Lenovo Center.
Washington finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for the Tar Heels (11-6, 4-1 ACC), who have won 20 of the last 26 games against the Wolfpack (9-7, 2-3) in Raleigh. UNC led by nine points late in the second half before N.C. State made a charge to tie the game at 61 with just under two minutes left.
Elliot Cadeau found Washington for a two-handed dunk with 24 seconds left and Washington swatted away Jayden Taylor’s potential game-tying layup before grabbing the rebound as the final buzzer sounded.
Here are some observations from the latest meeting between UNC and N.C. State.
In their first games as part of the UNC vs. N.C. State rivalry, Marcus Hill and Ian Jackson put on a show for their squads. Hill, a Bowling Green transfer, finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jackson, a freshman from the Bronx, had 21 points, including five 3-pointers. In a game that didn’t feature a lot of good offense, Hill and Jackson were great.
If you like offense, UNC vs. N.C. State wasn’t a pretty sight in the first half. The Tar Heels led 26-20 at the break in the lowest-scoring first half between the two programs since they combined for 41 points at the 1988 ACC Tournament in Greensboro. Hill had 10 points and six rebounds in the first half for N.C. State, but the Wolfpack missed 11 of its final 12 shots and made just 22.5% of its shots in the worst shooting half of its season. UNC closed the first half on a 12-3 run.
