Jacksonville senior Sanaa Carter was the only golfer to post a day one score below par, and despite adding five strokes to her score on the second day of competition, Carter ran away with the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A girls golf state title on Tuesday.
Carter shot a 1-under par 71 on Monday, then followed it up with a 4-over par 76 on Tuesday at the Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines. Her two-day score of 147 (+3) was six strokes ahead of second place, which went to Hibriten senior Trinity White.
The second day of play got off to a shaky start for Carter. She recorded a double bogey on the first hole and bogey on the second. She also recorded bogeys on No. 5 and No. 8, but a birdie on the 334-yard par 4 on No. 9 helped her settle in on the back nine.
Carter recorded two birdies on the back nine, but a double bogey on No. 17 evened them out.
This marks the first time a girls golfer has won a state championship at Jacksonville.
White shot a 78 (+6) on day one, then cut three strokes off her score on Tuesday’s final day of competition to finish with a combined scored of 153 (+9). She was one stroke ahead of Williams sophomore Gabriella Moorehead, who had a significant improvement from her first day. Moorehead shot a 9-over 81 on Monday, but improved to a 1-over 73 on Tuesday.
