BLOOMINGTON – The matchup between Indiana women’s basketball and Ohio State’s women’s program has been an exciting series to follow in recent years. The last two matchups have gone the Buckeyes’ way in close fashion, but the Hoosiers have had OSU’s number prior, winning the five meetings before then.

On Thursday night, Indiana regained their win streak in the series, upsetting No. 8 Ohio State 71-61 inside of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Like previous Ohio State teams under current head coach Kevin McGuff, the Buckeyes employed a full-court press early on, which has caused problems for IU in past meetings. However, the Hoosiers appeared unfazed in the first quarter, making nine of their first 10 field-goal attempts, some of which resulted from the press break. 

Indiana (17-9, 9-6) steamrolled through the first half, even when OSU pocketed the press early on. The Hoosiers finished 63 percent from the field and knocked down 5-of-8 3-pointers. IU was as dominant defensively, limiting Ohio State to 42 percent from the floor and 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. Heading into the locker room, Indiana led OSU 40-28. 

The Buckeyes (22-4, 11-4) went back to the press in the second half, which caused more issues for IU as compared to the first. The Hoosiers regressed offensively and racked up 13 turnovers, but still finished the half 45 percent from the field. Ohio State’s effort was too little too late, and Indiana cruised their way to an upset victory.

IU had no shortage of spectacular performances on the night. Sydney Parrish had another phenomenal outing, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Yarden Garzon ended with 16 points herself and added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Shay Ciezki and Karoline Striplin also added double-figure efforts with 16 and 11 points respectively. 

The Hoosiers will travel for another ranked matchup as they take on No. 22 Michigan State in East Lansing on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. ET.
