IU basketball vs. Iowa player ratings: Hoosiers ‘dominated in every phase’ in ugly loss

Indiana basketball got wiped out in Iowa City in primetime on Saturday night, losing 85-60 at Iowa in one of the most lopsided conference defeats in Mike Woodson’s four-year tenure.

The performance was enough for Fox analyst LaPhonso Ellis to say “Indiana has been dominated in every phase of the game tonight.”

Needless to say, the Hoosiers (13-4, 4-2) did not grade out well.

STARTERS

∎ Myles Rice: 3/10

Looked at least willing on a team that otherwise folded under scoreboard pressure. Too often forced action offensively, with three turnovers and an inefficient shooting night (4-of-11). More fundamentally, fell into the Iowa trap of getting sped up by the Hawkeyes’ pace, a fatal mistake for any Big Ten point guard.

∎ Trey Galloway: 1/10

Probably one of his least impactful games in an IU uniform, certainly since becoming a regular. Scored zero points and committed four turnovers, while struggling with fouls. An ugly night from a fifth-year guard whose team needed more.

∎ Mackenzie Mgbako: 1/10

Not the zero of the Southern Cal game — Mgbako scored six points Saturday — but once again struggled from the floor and once again seemed to lose his coach’s faith at times. Two bad games doesn’t make a slump, but IU can’t afford for this to be the start of one for its sophomore wing.

∎ Luke Goode: 2/10

Not helped by offensive messiness elsewhere, but other than a first-half 3 never really got going. His worst game since entering the starting lineup for Malik Reneau.

∎ Oumar Ballo: 2/10

Finished with a double-double, but his early turnovers and poor defensive possessions helped set a tone that weighed on IU all night long. The final numbers read better than the actual minutes played.

RESERVES

∎ Kanaan Carlyle: 4/10

Finally saw a few shots go down, to the tune of nine bench points. Not the most efficient shooting night, but if Carlyle can take some confidence from this then it will salvage at least a sliver of worth from an otherwise awful evening.

∎ Anthony Leal: 3/10

Doesn’t deserve tremendous criticism or praise. One of just two Hoosiers not to finish underwater in the plus-minus, so that’s something.

∎ Bryson Tucker: 3/10

Like Carlyle, had some decent moments offensively. Like Carlyle, still too offensively inefficient. Has to be stronger than getting blocked around the rim as often as he did Saturday.

∎ Langdon Hatton: 3/10

Played 16 minutes. Finished with eight points and three rebounds. A lot like Leal, others owned far more responsibility for the outcome than Hatton.
