THREE KEYS TO THE GAME
1. Indiana too strong, too balanced inside. The Hoosiers didn’t shoot often or well from long distance, but they were dominant inside the arc, making 26-of-39 shots, good for 67%. Malik Reneau and Oumar Ballo were a combined 12-of-13 from two, and each had seven rebounds. The Hoosiers also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Gophers 35-22. Minnesota had just six offensive rebounds.
2. Defense closes strong. Minnesota made 11 of their first 15 shots, but the IU defense stiffened after that. The Gophers made just 15-of-40 after that start, good for just 37.5%. The Hoosiers limited Minnesota to just 2-of-11 from beyond-the-arc, and the Gophers had as many turnovers as assists. In a stretch where IU gained early separation, Minnesota made just 3-of-18 shots and the Hoosiers went on a 30-13 run spanning halftime.
3. Carlyle and Tucker lead strong bench effort. Kanaan Carlyle had missed Indiana’s last three games, but he delivered a strong effort in his first game back with 14 points. He was 3-of-6 from three, and helped offset an off night from Trey Galloway, who was still starting in his place. Freshman Bryson Tucker added 16 points of instant offense off the bench, and he added six rebounds in 20 minutes.
