Professional golf officially embarks on a new frontier Tuesday night with the debut of a new virtual, interactive golf league, and its best immediate sales pitch might be that Tiger Woods is behind it all.

Woods and Rory McIlory were the most prominent members of the group that founded the TGL, a team-oriented competition combining a golf simulator on a supersized screen and an actual green for short game shots inside a Palm Gardens, Florida facility called the SoFi Center. The made-for-TV format was designed to lure in both golf fans and casual sports viewers, in part because it’s also more amenable for a 49-year-old legend of the game who struggles to play it consistently anymore because of chronic injury problems.

The TGL is another opportunity to see Woods swing a golf club alongside other PGA Tour professionals, which has become an increasingly rare sight in recent years. There will be 24 PGA Tour golfers and six teams for TGL’s first season, with featured matches Monday and Tuesday on ESPN or ESPN2 through March 25. Woods is slated to be part of the mix as a player and owner of the Jupiter Links Golf Club.

Yes. Woods’ TGR Ventures owns the Jupiter Links Golf Club and Woods is on the team roster along with Max Homa, Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner.

Tiger Woods TGL league schedule: How to watch

Woods and Jupiter Links Golf Club are scheduled to have five matches before the TGL postseason consisting of semifinals and finals. Their first match will be featured by ESPN on Jan. 14 for the second week of TGL action. Their first opponent is Los Angeles Golf Club, owned by Serena and Venus Williams and Giannis Antetokounmpo, among others, and featuring a roster with Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood and Sahith Theegala.

Jupiter Links also has matches slated to take place on Jan. 27, Feb. 18, Feb. 25 and March 4. Here’s a look at the complete TGL schedule:

Tiger Woods injury update

Woods appeared in good form last month playing with his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship, but reiterated to reporters at the event that he wasn’t yet ready for tournament play after another back surgery last September. Woods hasn’t played in a professional event since The Open Championship last July, when he missed the cut.

What is TGL?

TGL stands for TMRW Golf League, in reference to the company (TMRW Sports) that Woods, McIlroy and Mike McCarley started to get the league and several other projects off the ground. It is a new tech-infused golf league in partnership with the PGA Tour that’s designed to combine the latest in golf technology with in-person competition. It will include a shot clock, timeouts and both team and individual match play.

How does TGL work?

TGL pits two teams of three players against each other in a mix of simulator and traditional golf. Players tee off from a mat into a 64-by-53-foot screen. There will be fairway, rough and sand surfaces to hit from, as well. When the ball lands about 50 yards away from the pin, players will transition to the “Green Zone,” a 3,800-square-foot green that can be adjusted for variety on each hole.

The teams play nine holes of 3-on-3, alternate shot golf. Then, the three members of each team will each play two holes of head-to-head match play with each hole worth one point. If they remain tied, the match goes to an overtime, closest-to-the-pin competition. The overtime continues until one team has the two closest shots.

Teams are awarded two points in the standings for a win, one point for an overtime loss and no points for a loss. The top four teams advance to the TGL semifinals.
