Now in his third-year playing for the Houston Texans, John Metchie III had a breakout game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
The wideout caught five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was Metchie’s first in the NFL, and it was a big moment for the former Alabama star, who has battled leukemia and multiple injuries since entering the league.
Sunday’s game showed what Metchie is capable of, but will he be a reliable fantasy football player going forward?
Metchie proved that he can be a playmaker in Houston’s offense, which works in his favor. But he’ll still be down a bit on Houston’s depth chart.
Nico Collins didn’t play on Sunday, but he was activated from injured reserve on Saturday. His return is imminent, and when Collins is in the lineup, he’s C.J. Stroud’s favorite target. Collins led the NFL in receiving yards prior to suffering a hamstring injury in Week 5.
Tank Dell is also fully healthy, and he’ll have the No. 2 receiver spot when Collins returns. Dell has logged 165 receiving yards on 11 catches in the Texans’ last two contests.
Metchie shouldn’t be expected to produce like Collins or Dell. But it’s possible that he could fall into the Texans’ No. 3 spot after Sunday’s performance.
He’ll be competing with Xavier Hutchinson for that role. Hutchinson saw a season-high four targets in the Detroit game, but he hauled in just two of them for six yards.
The volume won’t be as high as it is for Collins or Dell, but Metchie will likely see a bigger role in the Texans’ offense. That alone makes Metchie a decent play in a flex spot.
