Former MVP and Heisman quarterback Cam Newton reemerged in the news this week. But not all press is good press.
Rumors about Newton’s finances and the possibility that the ex-Panthers quarterback is broke spread, but Newton has addressed them head-on.
Newton played 11 seasons in the NFL, reportedly earning over $133 million from his contracts. His biggest contract came from the Panthers in 2015, a five-year deal worth over $103 million. Newton awarded the Panthers with the best season of his career, winning MVP and leading them to a 15-1 record and Super Bowl appearance.
So did Newton lose all the money he made from these contracts? Here is a breakdown of Newton’s finances.

No, Newton is not broke. He addressed these rumors during an episode of the “4th and 1 with Cam Newton” podcast on Thursday. Newton noted that he is not making the same money he made while he played, but that does not mean he is not making money anymore through his investments and current job as a football analyst.
Newton appears on ESPN’s debate show First Take from time to time. He also has his own podcast.
“I’m used to a million dollars a month,” Newton said. “What in the world can I do make me a million dollars a month legally. A week, I’m sorry I keep saying a month, a week. Think about that, there’s nothing that I have created yet, that can provide a million dollars in a week.”
“To be able to have touched the money that I’ve touched, I’d be a f—ing fool to be broke right now.”
Newton said he flies commercial and drives regular cars because he’d “rather live the rest of my life comfortably like a prince rather than to splurge like a king.”
