STAMBAUGH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – At Young’s Recreation’s driving range on Monday, Jay Jurecic gave advice to high school golfers.

He stopped by to hold a golfing clinic before leaving for Scotland to compete in the PGA’s Senior Open. The golf tournament invites qualifying male golfers over 50 years old.

Jurecic says he began his golf journey in Iron County.

“Like I said, I learned how to golf at Young’s and now I’m going to the home of golf, Scotland, where golf started,” Jurecic said. “So, it’s been a long journey and I’ve enjoyed it and I’m very grateful to have the support of the community and the golf course.”

Jurecic trained his niece and Forest Park School’s Golf Coach Ashley Schober. She works with elementary aged golfers to train their athleticism.

Schober says Young’s Recreation is helping foster a new generation of Upper Michigan golfers.

“I don’t think there’s enough opportunities and that’s why we’re really pushing right now for this,” Schober said. “We have this opportunity with Young’s growing the game. Very important, getting clubs in kids’ hands, getting them out here. Making it fun.”

Young golfers can play for free through the clinic and Forest Park’s golf program.

Schober says people curious about golf should jump right in.

“Start. Because they say it’s the start that stops most people,” Schober said. “Go and rent some clubs or get whatever you have. Ask wherever your local golf course is, and just get on the driving range. Just start.”

Ten youth golfers attended the clinic.
