Hear from Sydney Affolter, Hannah Stuelke after the Hawkeyes lose to Nebraska
EUGENE, Ore. — Hannah Stuelke didn’t travel with the Iowa women’s basketball team to the Pacific Northwest. The junior forward will not only miss Sunday’s game against Oregon, she also is unlikely to play in Wednesday’s contest at Washington.
Stuelke suffered a concussion during overtime in Iowa’s 87-84 home loss to Nebraska on Thursday, the Des Moines Register has learned. She is officially “day-to-day,” according to a University of Iowa spokesperson. She is back in Iowa, resting and recovering.
Stuelke’s absence obviously makes Iowa’s efforts to snap a four-game losing streak Sunday more difficult in the Hawkeyes’ 4 p.m. CT game against Oregon.
Stuelke is coming off a 16-point, 16-rebound performance Thursday against Nebraska after being moved by head coach Jan Jensen exclusively to the “5” (or center) spot in Iowa’s lineup. She had been swinging between the “4” and “5” much of the season.
However, Stuelke left Thursday’s game against Nebraska with 3:27 left in overtime after getting fouled and missing two free throws. She did return with 9 seconds left and collected a steal. She also took part in postgame interviews after the loss.
This will be Stuelke’s first missed game of the season. In 18 games for the Hawkeyes, the 6-foot-2 Cedar Rapids product is averaging 12.9 points and a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game.
With Stuelke out, look for her minutes to be absorbed by senior Addison O’Grady and freshman Ava Heiden, an Oregon native.
The Hawkeyes next face Washington at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday in Seattle. The only way Stuelke could play is if she is cleared and then flies commercially out West, and that is extremely unlikely at this point.
