IOWA CITY — Iowa football has landed a quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class.
Cash Herrera announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes on Thursday.
Herrera attends The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, California. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, Herrera is considered a 3-star recruit, according to 247Sports’ ratings. He is also the 43rd-ranked quarterback in the class.
National recruiting analyst Greg Biggins wrote in September of Herrera: “He’s a traditional pocket passer but shows good mobility and can make plays off-script when a play breaks down. He has a good feel for the position in terms of throwing on time and with anticipation and can get the ball out quick and from different arm angles, not for show but for necessity. He’s a tough kid as well and will stand in and take a shot to get a throw off. He’s a player that is trending up for us and is projects as a high major Power 4 prospect.”
Herrera was at Kinnick Stadium as recently as early September. He visited Iowa for the Hawkeyes‘ rivalry matchup with Iowa State. Before the game, Herrera could be seen with Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester and later with tight ends/fullbacks coach Abdul Hodge.
Herrera’s recruiting blew up earlier this year. He also reported offers from San Diego State, Appalachian State, Washington State, Colorado State, Minnesota, Yale, Columbia, Brown, UCLA and Virginia Tech. All of those offers came in the span of a little over a month.
Iowa was the first Big Ten program to offer Herrera, with the Hawkeyes extending the opportunity in June.
Quarterback play has been a shortcoming for the Hawkeyes over the last few seasons. But there is hope that Lester can help change that. Lester has extensive knowledge of the position, having been a prolific passer in his playing days at Western Michigan and having mentored quarterbacks during his coaching career.
Iowa has a handful of young, but promising signal callers in the pipeline. Redshirt freshman Marco Lainez is currently Iowa’s QB3. James Resar is in his first season with the program. Jimmy Sullivan, who originally committed before Lester was hired, is part of the Hawkeyes’ 2025 class.
Herrera, who is still just in his junior season of high school football, still has time to grow before starting his college career.
Iowa is still in the early stages of putting together its 2026 recruiting class.
Herrera is just the Hawkeyes’ second commitment in that recruiting cycle. Waterloo West offensive lineman Carson Nielson, who announced his commitment in April, was the first prospect Iowa landed in the 2026 class.
Iowa is in pursuit of several others as it tries to build momentum on the recruiting trail. Among the many targets is Iowa City West’s Julian Manson. His current teammate, Mason Woods, is committed to Iowa in the 2025 class.
